Field Within is an exploration into recent expressions of the ethnographical turn in contemporary art through the works of Abdul Sharif Baruwa, Cana Bilir-Meier, Juliana Borinski, Guillermo Gómez-Peña & Balitronica Gómez (La Pocha Nostra), Verena Melgarejo Weinandt, Stephanie Misa and Érika Ordosgoitti, whose various practices thematize and problematize different dimensions of self-ethnography. The exhibition brings forward the ambivalent relation between art and anthropology. It stresses the overlapping concerns that have characterized both disciplines since the so-called “crisis of representation” of the latter. From this perspective, the ever-changing articulation of the notion of difference, the tensions between belonging and marginality, and the conceptualization of culture in plural are central to the journey here proposed.
