FLOWERS OF EVIL I

FLOWERS OF EVIL presents an ongoing artistic research about the coca plant and its journey(s) to Europe. It traces the encounter of a millenary sacred plant with occidental science and its outcome as a sort of a botanical Frankenstein, so desired and praised as feared and persecuted. The installation proposes to rethink the history of cocaine, as an illegal recreational drug and a western construct, to shed light on the effects of imperialism on our relationship to nature.

Evoking the tradition of the display of vitrines in historical exhibitions, the installation seeks to raise questions about representation in the construction of historical narratives and the role of museums in such a process.

(1) Mz* Baltazar’s lab is feminist creative space based in Vienna that committed to generating a culture of fearless making! An environment that fosters creativity, activism and provocative thinking!

(2) Artistic Bokeh is an initiative to qualitatively explore, map and extend the electrosphere with parameters of artistic research and development. Artistic Bokeh is cooperation partner of the project Artistic Technology Research and part of the Research Institute for Arts and Technology.

“Flowers of Evil” präsentiert die andauernde künstlerische Auseinandersetzung der mexikanischen Künstlerin Mariel Rodríguez mit der Coca Pflanze und ihrer/ihren Reise/n nach Europa.
Die Künstlerin geht dem Aufeinandertreffen einer seit Jahrhunderten als heilig erachteten Pflanze mit abendländischer Wissenschaft nach, das in einer Art botanischem Frankenstein resultierte; zugleich gewünscht und verehrt, gefürchtet und verfolgt. Die Installation will dazu bewegen, die Geschichte von Kokain als illegale Droge und Konzept des Westens zu überdenken und so die Auswirkung des Imperialismus auf unsere Beziehung zur Natur beleuchten.

Durch das Bedienen der Tradition des Kuriositätenkabinetts und den Vitrinen historischer Ausstellungen versucht die Installation Fragen bezüglich der Repräsentation in der Konstruktion historischer Narrative und der Rolle der Museen in einem solchen Prozess aufzuwerfen.
